The big challenge for this team: at the end of this project they would all be looking for work, because they were literally working themselves out of a job. That&#8217;s what happens on IT separation projects. But that doesn&#8217;t tell the whole story.<\/p><p><em>&#8220;What I really needed was a leadership intervention,&#8221;<\/em> our client confessed. <em>&#8220;Working with the Good Leadership team was a pivotal moment for me to see my impact on a team differently,&#8221;<\/em> he added. And the data on my first team report was mostly red. The report said everything we were feeling&#8230;red meant bad!&#8221;<\/em> he laughed.<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_13650\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13650\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13650\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/JCI-Whitepaper-First-Survey-1-300x256.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mostly low numbers on the Team Momentum Survey showed the leader why he got the &#8220;vote of no confidence.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In one really intense afternoon meeting, his team embraced a whole new level of healthy tension to really get in the face of their leader:<em>&#8220;We realized that what we were trying to do had never been done before &#8211; on such a large scale, with such a short time frame,&#8221;<\/em> he exclaimed. <em>&#8220;And that meant I had to get out of business as usual mode &#8211; lead with a lot more courage and a lot less micromanaging. They needed me to set the example of trusting one another.&#8221; <\/em><\/p><p>Fueled by\u00a0the idea that this could be their finest hour, the leadership team created three intense shared commitments:<\/p><ol><li>Make every hour count<\/li><li>Extraordinary results only come from great teamwork<\/li><li>We will help everyone on this team achieve a meaningful\u00a0next role &#8211; no matter what<\/li><\/ol><p>The turnaround was stunning to everyone involved. The new level of commitment meant that the top leaders worked 80 days in a row, without a day off &#8211; including summer holidays.<\/p><p>The reward: a standing ovation from the CEO and his executive team.\u00a0<em>&#8220;We accomplished what had never been done before &#8211; we finished on time, and $30M under budget,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0he beamed.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12658 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/GLE-Sparks-WorldNeedsYou-1-1-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"GLE Spark carpe diem\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/GLE-Sparks-WorldNeedsYou-1-1-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/GLE-Sparks-WorldNeedsYou-1-1.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The centerpieces of their strategy should sound familiar to readers of this blog:<\/p><p><strong>Goodness Pays:<\/strong> rewarding excellence, living generously, promoting fairness and spreading positivity.<\/p><p><strong>Blending the Seven Fs:<\/strong> helping each person grow personally and professionally in their\u00a0<em>faith, family, finances, fitness, friends, fun\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>future &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>as difficult as that may seem.<\/p><p>I will be presenting the <strong><em>&#8220;How did they really do it?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> for this story as a workshop at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.performanceexcellencenetwork.org\/events\/penworks-2017.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PEN Works Conference on April 24<\/a>.
