We shared a lot of laughter and humility while diving into our Personal Leadership through The Seven Fs.\u00a0 We also talked about how our Superman and Wonder Woman capes get in the way.<\/p>\n<p>In full disclosure, I\u2019m the first guy to admit that sometimes my Superman cape feels good! Speakers fancy their capes.\u00a0 Although, in my work as an executive coach, I often find leaders who like their capes way too much. They don&#8217;t feel the extra weight until they let the cape slide off their shoulders.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2767\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2767\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WonderBusinessWoman.iStock.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2767 \" title=\"Super businesswoman\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WonderBusinessWoman.iStock-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WonderBusinessWoman.iStock-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WonderBusinessWoman.iStock.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2767\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Are you capable of flying by, barking orders and passing judgement? Happens to the best of us&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s understandable, we know <em>leading by example<\/em> is powerful in demonstrating our competence and personal credibility. But followers today don\u2019t want their leaders to solve every problem. They don\u2019t appreciate seeing our capes flap when we fly through the room, barking orders and passing judgment. Followers expect to be enrolled in shaping a vision, building the strategy and solving the difficult problems along the way.\u00a0 Together.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few warning signals your cape may be getting too heavy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you bemoaning an endless list of things \u201conly I can do?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Are you wondering why others aren&#8217;t accountable to your standards?<\/li>\n<li>Do you wonder why people don\u2019t understand your strategy?<\/li>\n<li>Are your relationships strained?<\/li>\n<li>Are you worried the office morale is low and personal energy is waning?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s time to take off the cape. Have you invited people to refine your plan recently? Do you have the courage to define &#8220;what&#8221; needs to get fixed, but not &#8220;how?&#8221;\u00a0 When was the last time you asked: <em>Where are the forces of momentum alive in your work, both positive and negative?<\/em> <em>Internal and external.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you decide to let the cape slide off your shoulders a little,\u00a0 consider asking people to be involved in your thinking. Listen, smile, laugh, engage, empower.\u00a0 And while you&#8217;re at it,\u00a0 memorize what it feels like to be a really good leader again.<\/p>\n<p>Good leaders understand the job requires \u201cleading by example,\u201d while also listening, enrolling and empowering people.
