Like Michael Keaton in the 1983 film\u2026 I am <strong>\u201cMr. Mom\u201d<\/strong> this week.<\/p>\n<p>This ritual has been going on since our oldest child was two years old. He just turned 23, so that means this week has been a Darwinian test of my parenting for 21 years. 1997 was the apex \u2013 we had three kids under the age of five, which meant Melinda trusted me with a preschooler, a toddler and an infant.\u00a0 For five days.<\/p>\n<p><em>Five days!?<\/em> The whole word just laughed and said: wah, wah, wah\u2026blah, blah, blah.\u00a0 You pathetic whiner\u2026no one is crying for you!\u00a0 Back in those days, our office administrator Liz Seitsema would listen to my Mr. Mom episodes and <em>laugh at me<\/em>. I deserved it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2896\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2896\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/bonnieFranklin.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2896 \" title=\"bonnieFranklin\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/bonnieFranklin-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bonnie Franklin (left) liberated the stigma from single parenting with her role in the 1990s sitcom: One Day at a Time<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Actress Bonnie Franklin died last week.\u00a0 She became famous playing the single parent, Ann Romano, in the hit TV series &#8220;One Day at a Time&#8221;.\u00a0 Sociologists have already identified her role as the one to lift the stigma from single parenting. We know it worked, because years later Dan Quayle felt the anger of single parents when he criticized Murphy Brown &#8212; another TV single parent. Clearly, he hadn\u2019t ever done the Mr. Mom thing.<\/p>\n<p>Enlightened people understand there are reasonable explanations for why single parents exist today: both Moms <em>and<\/em> Dads. Unlike me, they perform the miracle full time. We all know it\u2019s hard work.\u00a0 Both the children and the parents deserve our most intense admiration. And support.<\/p>\n<p> <figure id=\"attachment_2899\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2899\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/photo4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2899\" title=\"photo[4]\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/photo4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2899\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melinda helps me create a Day-at-a-glance calendar with specific instructions for each day. Even I can&#8217;t screw this up!<\/figcaption><\/figure>The one thing all working parents have in common is \u201cpersonal leadership\u201d &#8212; the aura we produce at work. It isn\u2019t always easy to maintain a positive mood and tone at work when the kids don\u2019t sleep at night or cooperate in the morning!\u00a0 And it&#8217;s irritating to get a text message that says: \u201c<em>My lunch account is out of money!\u201d<\/em> during an important meeting.\u00a0 The least we can do as leaders is to understand what\u2019s going on in the personal lives of the people important to our success\u2026so we can help each other stay resilient, patient and positive.<\/p>\n<p>In the spirit of true disclosure, the hardest days of Mr. Mom are long gone for me. We only have one kid left at home, Anna, now a high school junior who has her own car. Normally she and I seize mom\u2019s vacation as an opportunity to <em>PARTY with our own rules. <\/em>But, alas, Anna has finals this week. Yesterday she asked me to leave her alone so she could STUDY. Sheeezzzz.\u00a0 Must be her mother\u2019s child.<\/p>\n<p>Good leaders make a habit of embracing daily parenting challenges in ways that help them show up at work with good energy.\u00a0 And they do us all a huge favor by producing good kids who will be our future leaders, employees and customers.<\/p>\n<p>Please share your joys as a single parent with us: full time or part time.\u00a0 We want to celebrate your dedication and courage. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, I\u2019m fixated on a specific segment of our society: we all need to celebrate the heroic efforts of single parents.
