We play our best when we can be our own best friend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Competitive golfers are encouraged to journal about their thoughts in the heat of the battle.\u00a0 The most common trap is negative self-talk.\u00a0 Sports psychologists\u00a0 say <em>&#8216;beating you up&#8217;<\/em> is the job of mother nature and your opponent: your job is to be your own best friend, so you can stay positive and keep your best golf possible.<\/p>\n<p>Can we agree sometimes it&#8217;s hard to avoid beating ourselves up?\u00a0 We&#8217;re all living in the same movie&#8230;it&#8217;s easy for unpredictable plot twists to trigger the negative self-talk. That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m so pleased to introduce you to my coach: Ellie Peterson.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3177\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3177\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/FacebookProfilePPW.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3177\" title=\"FacebookProfilePPW\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/FacebookProfilePPW-267x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/FacebookProfilePPW-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/FacebookProfilePPW-768x863.jpg 768w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/FacebookProfilePPW-610x685.jpg 610w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/FacebookProfilePPW-600x674.jpg 600w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/FacebookProfilePPW.jpg 804w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ellie Peterson is my coach: she has taught me to use affirmations and meditative exercise as a way to be my own best friend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ellie&#8217;s life story gives credibility to the idea that we can learn to be our own best friend.\u00a0 At 23 years old, she found herself divorced with three kids under 5 years old, making only $80 per week. \u201cNothing about my life was healthy,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>At her low point, she realized her own negative self-talk was at the heart of her problems.\u00a0 Today she&#8217;s a masterful coach, teaching people like me the very same affirmations that put her on the right path.<\/p>\n<p>Ellie came into my life via the <a href=\"http:\/\/goodleadershipbreakfast.com\">Good Leadership Breakfast<\/a>.\u00a0 After I joked about my new favorite book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Working-Out-Sucks-Doesnt-Have\/dp\/0738215694\">&#8220;Working Out Sucks!&#8221;<\/a>, Ellie marched up to me and said: <em>&#8220;I can teach you to enjoy &#8211; maybe even crave &#8211; exercise that makes you feel good about yourself.&#8221;<\/em> I politely listened and we exchanged cards.<\/p>\n<p>She called me several weeks later, as if she were an angel. That week I had experienced a series of shocking plot twists in my personal and professional life. The voice in my head was me beating up so much that I drained my resilience.\u00a0 Ellie caught me at the right time and introduced me to affirmations and <a href=\"http:\/\/ppworkouts.com\">Meditative Movement<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve learned to crave the meditative repetition and to also work on my faith.
