Today, I&#8217;m causing some of my own pain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A physician leader we coach was confronted with data he didn\u2019t like. He fancied his entrepreneurial status as a practice area leader. <em>\u201cI didn\u2019t get into medicine to play everything by the book,\u201d <\/em>he grunted. <em>\u201cSometimes my intimate understanding of the patient and following my gut- feel is best,\u201d <\/em>he rationalized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Embracing the brutal facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was the words: \u201cbottom quartile nationally\u201d that hurt most. <em>\u201cDoes this really mean my patients would get better care for this disease from 3 out of 4 doctors other than me?\u201d <\/em>he gasped. His emotional reaction came from his heart \u2013 but his head knew the facts don&#8217;t lie. And so the painful change journey began.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neuroscience: Change = Pain<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9639\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9639\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9639\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/BrainPain-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Neuroscience helps leaders understand how even the smallest requests for change create pain for followers.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/BrainPain-1.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/BrainPain-1-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/BrainPain-1-100x100.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9639\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Neuroscience helps leaders understand how even the smallest requests for change create pain for followers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Recent studies about neuroscience have confirmed humans perceive any meaningful change as \u201cpain.\u201d In other words, our brains literally reject change with many more times the intensity than our brains embrace what\u00a0\u201cpleasure\u201d might come from that change. My favorite article about this is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strategy-business.com\/article\/06207?gko=6da0a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Neuroscience of Leadership<\/a>, by David Rock and Jerry Schwartz. We use the article and its findings to shape the <a href=\"\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Good Leadership point of view<\/a> and development strategies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Head, Heart, Hands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On November 11, I will be one of the presenters at the Performance Excellence Network conference called: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/fall-conference-thriving-in-times-of-change-harnessing-the-power-of-culture-tickets-18141707335\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Managing Change and Culture Conference<\/a>. <\/strong>I was\u00a0specifically asked to be a featured presenter, because of our approach to\u00a0Leading Change. They repeatedly told him how they wanted him to treat the disease (Hands). But he ignored them. Why? Because they skipped the most important part of the leading change formula: Explain \u201cwhy\u201d to the Head with credible data first, to earn the opportunity to motivate his Heart to consider a new approach. Head, heart, hands. Last week I attended a leadership conference hosted by The Studor Group \u2013 an Huron Consulting company that has transformed hospital leadership in America. The Studor group has created a masterful system for helping unite clinical and non-clinical talent in hospitals around the idea of \u201chardwiring excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most important thing I learned is that our Head-Heart-Hands approach to leading change is a world class idea.<\/p>\n<p>Good leaders understand significant change inflicts pain on people.
